Ascoril Dry Cough & Cold Syrup 100ml contains Dextromethorphan 10mg, Triprolidine 1.25mg, Pseudoephedrine 30mg and Menthol 1.5mg per 5ml.
It is a cough-and-cold preparation used to relieve dry cough, runny nose, sneezing and nasal congestion associated with common colds.
It may cause drowsiness, while pseudoephedrine may increase blood pressure.
Take the dose stated on the pack, measured with the cup provided, up to three times daily, or as your pharmacist advises. Shake the bottle before pouring. It suits an evening dose well, because a dry cough is usually at its worst lying down and the syrup helps you sleep. Drink water and use steam inhalation alongside it. Do not take it for more than five days without advice, and do not use it at the same time as an expectorant or mucolytic syrup, which are designed to do the opposite job.
This is the wrong syrup for a wet, chesty, productive cough. Suppressing a cough that is clearing mucus traps that mucus in the lungs. Do not give it to young children without specific advice, and never combine it with another cough or cold medicine without checking the ingredients. It causes drowsiness, so avoid driving and alcohol. The decongestant component makes it unsuitable in high blood pressure, heart disease, overactive thyroid, glaucoma and prostate enlargement, and it must not be used with an MAOI antidepressant. Dextromethorphan can interact dangerously with SSRI and SNRI antidepressants, tramadol and linezolid, causing serotonin syndrome. Seek medical care for a cough lasting more than three weeks, coughing blood, breathlessness, chest pain, weight loss or night sweats.
Store below 25 degrees Celsius, upright, with the cap firmly closed, away from direct sunlight, and out of reach of children. Do not refrigerate unless the label says so. Keep the measuring cup with the bottle. Once opened, use within the period stated on the carton, and never beyond the printed expiry date.
