Description

How to use

Shake the bottle well before each dose and measure with the syringe or cup supplied. Usually given three times daily after food, which reduces the nausea and metallic taste metronidazole causes. Complete the whole course, which is typically five to ten days, and do not stop when the diarrhoea settles, because the second ingredient is working on a stage of the parasite that causes no symptoms at all. Give plenty of fluids alongside, and oral rehydration solution if the child is losing stool frequently.

Important warnings

No alcohol in any form during the course or for at least 48 hours afterwards, including alcohol-containing tonics, cough syrups and mouthwashes, because metronidazole with alcohol causes flushing, vomiting, headache and palpitations. Tell the prescriber about liver disease, blood disorders, epilepsy or nerve problems. Metronidazole may darken the urine, which is harmless. Prolonged or repeated courses can cause numbness and tingling in the hands and feet, so report that. Avoid in the first trimester of pregnancy unless a doctor decides otherwise. Seek urgent care for blood in the stool with high fever, severe abdominal pain and tenderness, persistent vomiting, or signs of dehydration such as sunken eyes, no tears, drowsiness or reduced urine.

Storage

Store below 25 degrees Celsius, upright with the cap tightly closed, protected from light, and out of reach of children. Do not freeze. Shake before every dose. Once opened, use within the in-use period stated on the carton, and do not use after the printed expiry date. Do not keep a part-used bottle for a future episode of diarrhoea.
