Description

How to use

Shake vigorously before every dose and measure with the syringe or cup provided. Normally given three times daily after food. The 100 ml bottle exists because a proper amoebiasis course runs up to ten days and an older child on a larger dose will exhaust a small bottle before finishing. Check with the pharmacist that the volume covers the prescribed course. Continue to the last dose even though the diarrhoea will have stopped days earlier, and keep fluid intake high throughout.

Important warnings

Strictly no alcohol during the course and for at least 48 hours afterwards, including alcohol-containing tonics and syrups, because the combination with metronidazole causes severe flushing, vomiting and palpitations. Tell the prescriber about liver disease, epilepsy, blood disorders or existing nerve symptoms. Dark urine is expected and harmless. Numbness or tingling in the hands or feet during a long or repeated course should be reported immediately. Avoid in the first trimester of pregnancy unless specifically prescribed. Get urgent medical care for high fever with bloody diarrhoea, severe abdominal pain and tenderness particularly under the right ribs, persistent vomiting, or signs of dehydration.

Storage

Store below 25 degrees Celsius, upright, tightly capped, out of direct light and out of reach of children. Do not freeze. Shake before each dose. Use within the in-use period printed on the carton once opened and never after the expiry date. Do not retain a part-used bottle for a later episode; a new episode needs a new assessment, because not all diarrhoea is amoebiasis.
