Description

How to use

Shake the bottle thoroughly before every dose and measure with the syringe or cup supplied. Usually given three times daily after food, which blunts the nausea and metallic taste. Courses commonly run five to ten days; complete every dose even though the diarrhoea will have stopped long before the bottle is empty, because the diloxanide component is clearing a stage of the parasite that produces no symptoms. Keep fluid intake high and use oral rehydration solution if stools are frequent.

Important warnings

No alcohol during the course or for 48 hours afterwards, in any form, including alcohol-containing tonics, cough syrups and mouthwash; the reaction with metronidazole causes flushing, vomiting, headache and a racing heart. Tell the prescriber about liver disease, epilepsy, blood disorders or existing numbness in the hands or feet. Darkened urine is expected and harmless. Report new tingling or numbness, which can follow long or repeated metronidazole courses. Avoid in the first trimester of pregnancy unless a doctor specifically prescribes it. Seek urgent care for bloody diarrhoea with high fever, severe abdominal pain especially under the right ribs, persistent vomiting, or dehydration.

Storage

Store below 25 degrees Celsius, upright and tightly capped, away from direct light and out of reach of children. Do not freeze. Shake before each dose. Once opened, use within the in-use period stated on the carton and never past the printed expiry date. Do not keep a part-used bottle for a future bout of diarrhoea, since the next episode may have an entirely different cause.
