Description

Dysen Suspension contains Secnidazole 750mg in a 30ml oral suspension, an antimicrobial medicine that treats certain intestinal infections caused by parasites and other susceptible organisms.

It is mainly used for intestinal amoebiasis and giardiasis, helping clear the infection and relieve symptoms such as diarrhoea and abdominal discomfort.

Prepare as directed, shake well before use and take exactly as prescribed; avoid alcohol during treatment and seek medical advice if pregnant, especially during the first trimester.

How to use

Shake the bottle and measure the full prescribed volume with the cup or syringe supplied. Secnidazole is long-acting, so treatment is often a single dose or a very short course, which is why the bottle is small. Give it after food to reduce nausea. For giardiasis and amoebiasis a single dose is common; for intestinal amoebiasis it may be repeated over three days. Follow the prescription exactly rather than assuming, and do not repeat a dose because the child still has loose stools on day two, since it takes several days for the bowel to settle.

Important warnings

No alcohol for at least three days after the dose, longer than with metronidazole because secnidazole persists in the body far longer; the reaction causes flushing, vomiting, headache and palpitations. Tell the prescriber about liver disease, epilepsy, blood disorders and any existing numbness or tingling. Urine may darken, which is harmless. Avoid in the first trimester of pregnancy unless a doctor prescribes it. Seek urgent care for bloody diarrhoea with high fever, severe abdominal pain or tenderness under the right ribs, persistent vomiting, or dehydration with sunken eyes, no tears, reduced urine or drowsiness.

Storage

Store below 25 degrees Celsius, upright with the cap tightly closed, away from direct light and out of reach of children. Do not freeze. Shake before use. Because a course is often a single dose, any remaining suspension should be returned to the pharmacy rather than kept; do not use it for a later episode without a new assessment. Do not use after the expiry date on the carton.
