Description

How to use

One 400 mg tablet once daily at about the same time each day, swallowed whole with water. It can be taken with or without food, though taking it with a meal reduces nausea. Once-daily dosing makes this one of the easiest antibiotic courses to complete, so there is little excuse for missing doses. Course length varies widely: a few days for a simple urinary infection, one to two weeks for typhoid. Follow the prescription and finish it, particularly for enteric fever where relapse after a short course is common.

Important warnings

Not for anyone with a cephalosporin allergy or a severe penicillin allergy involving swelling, hives or breathing difficulty. Tell your prescriber about kidney disease, which requires dose reduction, and about previous colitis or antibiotic-associated diarrhoea. Seek emergency care for facial or throat swelling, wheeze, or a rash that blisters or peels. Report severe, watery or bloody diarrhoea during or up to two months after the course. Third-generation cephalosporins are a valuable and increasingly threatened resource, so do not use leftover tablets for a future fever or share them; every unnecessary course accelerates resistance.

Storage

Store below 25 degrees Celsius in a dry place away from moisture, sunlight and heat, and out of reach of children. Keep the tablets sealed in the blister until each dose. Do not use after the expiry date on the pack. Return any unused tablets to the pharmacy rather than keeping a partial course in the house, where it will eventually be taken for something it does not treat.
