Clarithromycin 500mg tablets contain clarithromycin 500mg, a macrolide antibiotic used to fight certain bacterial infections.
It is commonly used for infections of the throat, ears, sinuses, chest/lungs and skin, and as part of combination treatment for H. pylori stomach infection.
Take exactly as prescribed and complete the full course; it can interact with several medicines, so tell your pharmacist or doctor about other medicines you take.
One 500 mg tablet twice daily, twelve hours apart, or exactly as prescribed. It can be taken with or without food, though taking it with food reduces nausea noticeably. Swallow whole with water. When it is part of a Helicobacter pylori eradication regimen, it is taken alongside a proton pump inhibitor and a second antibiotic, and every component must be taken for the full period; missing one drug in a triple therapy is the main reason eradication fails and resistance develops. Complete the course.
Clarithromycin has a large number of significant drug interactions and must not be started without a full medicine list. It should not be combined with simvastatin or lovastatin, because of a risk of severe muscle breakdown, and it raises levels of warfarin, colchicine, digoxin, carbamazepine, ciclosporin, tacrolimus, midazolam and several others. Avoid with drugs that prolong the QT interval, and in known long QT syndrome, low potassium or magnesium. Tell your prescriber about liver or kidney disease and about myasthenia gravis. Avoid in the first trimester of pregnancy. Seek care for palpitations, fainting, yellow eyes, dark urine, severe or bloody diarrhoea, or a rash that blisters.
Store below 25 degrees Celsius in a dry place, away from moisture, light and heat, and out of reach of children. Keep the tablets in their blister until each dose. Do not use after the expiry date on the pack. If clarithromycin has been dispensed as part of a combination pack for stomach ulcer treatment, keep the whole pack together so that no component is taken alone.
