Ultraflox 500mg tablets contain Ciprofloxacin 500mg, a fluoroquinolone antibiotic used to fight certain bacterial infections.
It is commonly used for susceptible infections such as urinary tract, gastrointestinal and some other bacterial infections, helping stop the growth of the bacteria causing the infection.
Take only as prescribed and complete the course; separate it from antacids, iron or zinc products, and seek medical advice if you develop tendon pain or swelling.
One tablet twice daily, twelve hours apart, swallowed whole with a full glass of water. It may be taken with or without food, but keep at least two hours between the tablet and milk, yoghurt, antacids, iron, zinc, calcium or magnesium supplements, multivitamins and sucralfate, all of which bind ciprofloxacin and can eliminate most of the dose. Drink two to three litres of water daily through the course. Complete the number of days prescribed and avoid strong sunlight and tanning.
Stop the tablet and contact a doctor immediately for pain, swelling or tenderness in a tendon, especially the Achilles at the back of the ankle, since rupture can occur early in a course and is far more likely over 60, on steroids, or after transplant. Stop also for new numbness, tingling or burning in the hands or feet, and for confusion, hallucinations, severe anxiety, depression or suicidal thoughts. Avoid in epilepsy, myasthenia gravis, known long QT syndrome, pregnancy, breastfeeding and in children. Ciprofloxacin sharply raises theophylline and tizanidine levels and interacts with warfarin; hand the pharmacist a full medicine list.
Store below 30 degrees Celsius in a dry place, protected from light and out of reach of children. Keep the tablets in their blister until each dose. Do not use after the expiry date on the pack. Return unused tablets to the pharmacy rather than keeping them at home, since leftover ciprofloxacin is among the most frequently misused antibiotics in Kenya and is routinely taken for coughs and colds it cannot treat.
