Hyoscine butylbromide is an antispasmodic and anticholinergic medicine that reduces involuntary contractions of smooth muscle. It is commonly used to relieve gastrointestinal cramps and spasms, including abdominal cramping associated with IBS, as well as genitourinary tract spasms.
Unlike painkillers such as ibuprofen or paracetamol, its main action is to relax the muscle causing the cramp, making it particularly useful when pain is associated with smooth-muscle spasm.
Route: Oral Adults and children over 12 years: 1–2 tablets (10–20 mg) up to 4 times daily as required. For IBS symptoms, a usual starting dose is 1 tablet 3 times daily, which may be increased to 2 tablets 4 times daily if necessary. Children 6–12 years: 1 tablet 3 times daily, only when appropriate and according to professional advice. Swallow the tablets whole with water. They should not be taken continuously for prolonged periods without investigating the cause of abdominal pain.
