Pulmocef 500mg contains Cefuroxime 500mg, a cephalosporin antibiotic used to fight susceptible bacterial infections.
It is commonly used for infections of the chest/lungs, throat, ears, sinuses, skin and urinary tract.
Take exactly as prescribed, preferably after food, and complete the full course; avoid use if you have had a serious allergy to cefuroxime or other cephalosporin antibiotics.
The usual adult dose is one 500 mg tablet twice daily, twelve hours apart, giving a five-day course from this pack. Cefuroxime axetil must be taken just after food, because absorption almost doubles with a meal and the tablet works poorly on an empty stomach. Swallow whole with water; the tablet is intensely bitter if broken. Keep to the twelve-hour gap and finish the full course your prescriber wrote, even once the cough or fever has settled.
Do not take if you have had a severe allergic reaction to a cephalosporin or penicillin, such as facial swelling, hives or breathing difficulty. Tell your prescriber about kidney disease, colitis or previous antibiotic-associated diarrhoea, and about pregnancy or breastfeeding. Get emergency help for swelling of the face or throat, wheezing, or a rash that blisters or peels. Report severe, watery or bloody diarrhoea during the course or in the weeks after. Cefuroxime can interfere with some urine glucose tests and with the Coombs blood test. It may mask the symptoms of, but not cure, an untreated syphilis infection.
Keep below 25 degrees Celsius in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture, out of reach of children. Leave the tablets in the blister until you take each dose. Do not use after the expiry date on the pack.
