Cefalexin is a cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections. This suspension contains 125mg Cefalexin per 5ml.
It is commonly used for infections of the throat, ears, skin, urinary tract and respiratory system when caused by susceptible bacteria.
Take exactly as prescribed and complete the full course; do not use it for colds or flu, and seek advice if you have a serious allergy to penicillin or cephalosporin antibiotics.
Reconstituted with water by the pharmacist or exactly as the label directs. Shake well before each dose and measure with the syringe or cup supplied. Cefalexin is usually given three or four times a day, so plan the doses around waking, meals and bedtime. It can be given with or without food, though food reduces nausea. Space the doses as evenly as the day allows and complete the whole course, particularly for a streptococcal throat infection where the full ten days is what protects the heart.
Do not give to a child with a cephalosporin allergy, or one who has had a severe immediate reaction to penicillin with swelling, hives or breathing difficulty. Tell the prescriber about kidney disease, since the dose must be reduced, and about any previous antibiotic-associated colitis. Seek emergency care for facial or tongue swelling, wheeze, or a rash that blisters or peels. Report severe, watery or bloody diarrhoea during or in the weeks after the course. Cefalexin can produce false positive urine glucose results and can affect the Coombs test, so mention it if laboratory tests are planned.
Keep the sealed powder below 25 degrees Celsius in a dry place. Once made up, refrigerate between 2 and 8 degrees Celsius, do not freeze, and discard the remainder after the in-use period on the label, typically fourteen days. Write the reconstitution date on the bottle. Shake before each dose, keep the cap tight, store on a fridge shelf rather than the door, and keep out of reach of children.
