Neonatal Ampiclox Suspension contains Ampicillin 125mg and Cloxacillin 125mg per 5ml, two penicillin-type antibiotics used together against certain bacterial infections.
It is used for susceptible bacterial infections in newborns and young infants, including some respiratory, skin and soft-tissue infections.
Use only under a healthcare professional’s direction; shake well before each dose, measure accurately and complete the prescribed course.
This is a concentrated preparation dosed in fractions of a millilitre with the graduated dropper supplied, and the dropper that comes with the bottle is the only device that should ever be used. Shake the bottle well before each dose. Draw up exactly the volume written on the prescription, place it slowly against the inside of the baby's cheek and allow the baby to swallow, rather than squirting it toward the back of the throat. Give it before a feed rather than after, since absorption is better on an empty stomach. Give every dose at the interval prescribed and complete the full course.
A newborn who is unwell is a medical emergency, not a pharmacy decision. Poor feeding, unusual sleepiness or floppiness, a weak or high-pitched cry, fast or grunting breathing, chest indrawing, a temperature above 37.5 or below 36 degrees, a bulging fontanelle, jaundice in the first day of life, vomiting everything, fewer wet nappies, or a rash that does not fade under pressure all need immediate hospital assessment. This suspension should only be used under a prescriber's direction and with a dose calculated on the baby's weight. Never estimate a neonatal dose, never use a household spoon, and never give a dose left over from an older sibling. Stop and seek care immediately for any rash, swelling or breathing change after a dose.
Store the unopened powder below 25 degrees Celsius in a dry place. After reconstitution, keep the bottle refrigerated between 2 and 8 degrees Celsius, never frozen, and discard the remainder at the end of the in-use period stated on the label, typically seven days. Write the reconstitution date on the bottle. Keep the dropper with the bottle, rinse it after each use, and keep everything well out of reach of children.
