Phylopen DS 500mg contains Flucloxacillin 500mg, a penicillin-type antibiotic mainly effective against certain bacteria causing skin and soft-tissue infections.
It is commonly used for boils, abscesses, infected wounds, cellulitis and other susceptible bacterial infections.
Take exactly as prescribed, preferably on an empty stomach; complete the full course and avoid use if you have a serious penicillin allergy.
The usual adult dose is one 500 mg capsule four times a day, which makes twenty capsules a five-day course. Flucloxacillin is one of the few antibiotics that genuinely must be taken on an empty stomach: one hour before food or two hours after, with a full glass of water. Food cuts absorption substantially and can leave you with too little drug to clear the infection. Stay upright for a few minutes after swallowing. Space the four doses evenly and complete the course even after the redness settles.
Do not take if you are allergic to penicillin or any beta-lactam antibiotic. Tell your prescriber if you have liver disease, if you are over 50, or if you have had jaundice with flucloxacillin before, since liver injury is the reaction this particular penicillin is known for and it is more common in older patients and with longer courses. Seek urgent care for facial or throat swelling, wheeze or a blistering rash. Report yellowing of the eyes, dark urine, pale stools, itching without a rash, or severe abdominal pain, including up to two months after the course finishes.
Store below 25 degrees Celsius in a dry place, away from sunlight and out of reach of children. Keep capsules in the original blister or bottle until each dose. Do not use after the expiry date on the pack, and return anything left over to the pharmacy.
