Metronidazole 200mg tablets contain metronidazole 200mg, an antimicrobial medicine that treats certain bacterial and parasitic infections.
It is commonly used for amoebiasis, giardiasis, bacterial vaginosis, trichomoniasis, dental infections and other susceptible infections.
Take exactly as prescribed and complete the course; take with or after food if it causes stomach upset, and avoid alcohol during treatment and for at least 48 hours after the last dose.
Take the number of tablets and the frequency your prescriber has written; the 200 mg strength is often used two or three times daily, and in older children the dose is calculated by body weight rather than assumed. Take each tablet after food with a full glass of water to reduce nausea and the metallic taste, and swallow whole because the tablet is intensely bitter. Space doses evenly. Complete the full course rather than stopping when symptoms improve, since protozoal infections in particular relapse readily after a shortened course.
No alcohol during the course or for 48 hours afterwards, including alcohol-containing tonics, syrups and mouthwashes. Tell your prescriber about liver disease, epilepsy, blood disorders, and any existing numbness or tingling, and hand over a full medicine list, since metronidazole interacts with warfarin, lithium, phenytoin and disulfiram. Darkened urine is harmless. Report new numbness, tingling or burning in the hands or feet, unsteadiness, or a severe persistent headache. Avoid in the first trimester of pregnancy unless a doctor prescribes it knowing you are pregnant. Do not give this to a child without a weight-based dose from a prescriber.
Store below 25 degrees Celsius in a dry place, away from light and moisture, out of reach of children. Keep the tablets in their blister until each dose. Do not use after the expiry date on the pack. Return unused tablets to the pharmacy rather than keeping them, and do not use a leftover course for a later episode of diarrhoea, which may have an entirely different cause.
