How to use

The powder is reconstituted with water. Shake well before every dose and measure with the syringe or cup supplied rather than a household spoon. Amoxicillin can be given with or without food, which makes it one of the easier suspensions to fit around a child's day. It is usually given three times daily, roughly eight hours apart, though some pneumonia regimens use twice-daily higher doses. Complete the whole course. If a dose is vomited within thirty minutes, repeat it; otherwise wait for the next.

Important warnings

Do not give to a child with a penicillin or beta-lactam allergy. Tell the prescriber about kidney disease and about glandular fever, in which amoxicillin causes a widespread rash in the great majority of patients, which is often mistaken for a drug allergy and labels a child unnecessarily for life. Seek emergency care for swelling of the face, lips or tongue, hives, wheeze or breathing difficulty. Report severe, watery or bloody diarrhoea during or in the weeks after the course. A flat, blotchy, non-itchy rash appearing several days into treatment is common and usually not a true allergy, but it should still be shown to a clinician rather than judged at home.

Storage

Store the sealed powder below 25 degrees Celsius in a dry place. Once made up, keep it refrigerated between 2 and 8 degrees Celsius, do not freeze, and discard the remainder after seven days or the period stated on the label. Write the reconstitution date on the bottle. Shake before every dose, keep the cap closed, store on a fridge shelf rather than the door, and keep out of reach of children.
