Cefuroxime 250mg tablets contain cefuroxime 250mg, a cephalosporin antibiotic used to fight certain bacterial infections.
It is commonly used for infections of the throat, ears, sinuses, chest/lungs, skin and urinary tract when caused by susceptible bacteria.
Take exactly as prescribed, preferably after food to improve absorption, and complete the full course; do not use for colds or flu.
One 250 mg tablet twice daily, twelve hours apart, or as prescribed. Take it just after food, which roughly doubles absorption; on an empty stomach the dose may be too low to work. Swallow whole with water without breaking or chewing, as the tablet is intensely bitter inside. Keep the twelve-hour interval and complete the course. If the 250 mg strength has been chosen for an older child, use the exact number of tablets and the exact interval the prescriber specified rather than adjusting by size.
Not for anyone with a cephalosporin allergy or a severe penicillin allergy involving swelling, hives or breathing difficulty. Tell your prescriber about kidney disease, which requires dose adjustment, and about previous antibiotic-associated colitis. Seek emergency care for facial or throat swelling, wheeze, or a blistering or peeling rash. Report severe, watery or bloody diarrhoea during or in the weeks after the course. Cefuroxime can interfere with urine glucose tests and the Coombs test. Do not use leftover tablets for a later infection, and do not share them.
Keep below 25 degrees Celsius in a dry place away from steam, sunlight and heat, out of reach of children. Leave the tablets in their blister until each dose. Do not store them in a bathroom cabinet or a car. Do not use after the expiry date printed on the pack, and return anything left over to the pharmacy rather than keeping a partial course at home.
