Description

How to use

Disperse the tablet in a small amount of clean drinking water, about a tablespoon, stir until it breaks up, and give the whole amount immediately, then rinse the cup with a little more water and give that too so no drug is left behind. Do not make it up in advance. Give it at the start of a feed or meal to reduce diarrhoea. Usually twice daily, twelve hours apart, or as prescribed. Complete the whole course. Dispersible tablets can also be swallowed whole by an older child who is able to.

Important warnings

Not for a child with a penicillin or beta-lactam allergy, or one who has had jaundice or a liver reaction after amoxiclav. Tell the prescriber about kidney or liver disease, and about glandular fever, in which amoxicillin causes a florid rash. Seek emergency care for swelling of the face, lips or tongue, wheeze, breathing difficulty, or a rash that blisters or peels. Report severe, watery or bloody diarrhoea during or up to two months after the course, and any yellow eyes, dark urine or pale stools. Do not swap between amoxiclav strengths by counting tablets, since the ratio of amoxicillin to clavulanate differs between preparations.

Storage

Store below 25 degrees Celsius in a dry place, and this matters more than usual: dispersible tablets are made to absorb water quickly, so humidity ruins them and degrades the clavulanic acid. Keep each tablet sealed in its blister until the moment you disperse it, never decant them into a pill box, keep them out of the bathroom, and store out of reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date.
