Ornidazole 500mg tablets contain ornidazole 500mg, an antimicrobial medicine used against certain parasites and bacteria.
It is commonly used for amoebiasis, giardiasis, trichomoniasis, bacterial vaginosis and other susceptible infections.
Take exactly as prescribed, preferably with or after food; avoid alcohol during treatment and complete the prescribed course.
One tablet twice daily, twelve hours apart, or exactly as prescribed; courses are typically three to five days for amoebiasis and one to two days for giardiasis. Take each tablet after food with a full glass of water. Swallow whole. Space the doses evenly. Complete the course rather than stopping when symptoms settle, because protozoal infections relapse readily after a shortened course. For trichomoniasis the sexual partner is treated at the same time even if he has no symptoms.
Tell your prescriber about liver disease, epilepsy or any seizure disorder, blood disorders, multiple sclerosis, and any existing numbness or tingling in the hands or feet. Nitroimidazoles as a class can cause peripheral neuropathy with prolonged or repeated use, so report new numbness, tingling, burning or unsteadiness. Avoid in the first trimester of pregnancy and while breastfeeding unless a doctor specifically prescribes it. Ornidazole enhances the effect of warfarin. Although ornidazole is not generally associated with the alcohol reaction that metronidazole causes, avoiding alcohol during any antimicrobial course remains sensible. Seek care for a blistering rash, jaundice, or severe abdominal pain.
Store below 25 degrees Celsius in a dry place, away from light and moisture, and out of reach of children. Keep the tablets in their blister until each dose. Do not use after the expiry date on the pack. Return unused tablets to the pharmacy rather than keeping them, and do not use a leftover course for a later episode of diarrhoea or vaginal discharge without a fresh assessment.
