Doxycycline 100mg capsules contain doxycycline 100mg, a tetracycline antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections.
It is commonly used for respiratory and skin infections, acne, and some sexually transmitted infections such as chlamydia, when prescribed.
Take with plenty of water while sitting or standing and avoid lying down for at least 30 minutes; separate it from antacids, iron or calcium supplements, and avoid use during pregnancy unless specifically prescribed.
One capsule twice daily, twelve hours apart, or as prescribed. Two rules matter more than anything else. Take each capsule with a full glass of water and stay sitting or standing for at least thirty minutes afterwards, because doxycycline that lodges in the oesophagus causes severe chemical ulceration. And keep at least two hours between the capsule and milk, yoghurt, antacids, iron, calcium, zinc or magnesium supplements, which bind it and block absorption. Take it with a light meal if it upsets your stomach. Complete the course.
Doxycycline causes marked sun sensitivity: a short time in strong sun can produce a severe burn, so cover up, use a hat and avoid the middle of the day. Not for use in pregnancy or breastfeeding, or in children under eight years, because it stains developing teeth permanently and affects bone growth. Tell your prescriber about liver disease, myasthenia gravis, and any use of warfarin, retinoids such as isotretinoin, or antiepileptic drugs. Stop and seek care for severe pain on swallowing, severe headache with visual disturbance, a blistering rash, yellow eyes or dark urine, or severe or bloody diarrhoea.
Store below 25 degrees Celsius in a dry place, protected from light and moisture, and out of reach of children. Keep capsules in their blister until each dose. Do not use after the expiry date on the pack. Degraded tetracyclines can become toxic to the kidneys, which makes the expiry date on this particular antibiotic more than a formality; discard old stock rather than taking it, and return unused capsules to the pharmacy.
