Augmentin 1000mg tablets contain Amoxicillin 875mg and Clavulanic Acid 125mg, a combination antibiotic used against susceptible bacterial infections.
They are commonly used for infections of the ears, sinuses, throat, chest/lungs, skin, teeth and urinary tract.
Take with food and exactly as prescribed; complete the full course and avoid use if you have a serious penicillin allergy.
The usual adult dose is one 1 g tablet twice daily, twelve hours apart, which makes this fourteen-tablet pack a complete seven-day course. Take it at the start of a meal with a full glass of water, swallowed whole. The twice-daily schedule is easier to keep than the three-times-daily 625 mg, but only if you keep the twelve-hour gap; taking both tablets in the evening does not work. Finish the course as prescribed even after the symptoms clear.
Not for anyone allergic to penicillin or with previous amoxiclav-related jaundice or liver injury. This higher strength is not suitable for children under 40 kg, and the dose must be reduced in moderate or severe kidney impairment, so tell your prescriber about kidney problems. Avoid in glandular fever. Discuss warfarin, methotrexate and allopurinol use. Seek emergency care for facial or throat swelling, wheezing or a peeling rash. Report severe or bloody diarrhoea, dark urine or yellow eyes, including in the weeks after finishing.
Keep below 25 degrees Celsius in the sealed blister, in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and out of reach of children. Do not move these tablets into a weekly pill box, because moisture in the air destroys the clavulanic acid and leaves you taking plain amoxicillin. Do not use after the printed expiry date.
