Description

Nitrofurantoin 100mg tablets contain nitrofurantoin 100mg, an antibiotic that works mainly in the urinary tract to fight certain bacteria.

It is mainly used to treat uncomplicated urinary tract infections (UTIs), such as bladder infections, helping clear the infection and relieve symptoms like burning and frequent urination.

Take exactly as prescribed with food or milk and complete the full course; it is not suitable for most kidney infections or infections outside the urinary tract.

How to use

One tablet twice daily for the number of days prescribed, usually five to seven for a bladder infection. Take each tablet with food or a glass of milk. This is not optional: food substantially improves absorption and markedly reduces the nausea that is nitrofurantoin's main drawback. Swallow whole with water and drink well through the day. Expect your urine to turn dark yellow or brown, which is harmless and expected. Complete the course even though the burning usually settles within a day or two.

Important warnings

Nitrofurantoin must not be used if your kidney function is significantly reduced, because the drug then fails to concentrate in the urine where it works while accumulating in the body where it causes harm; tell your prescriber about any kidney problem. Avoid in G6PD deficiency, in babies under three months, and at term in pregnancy from 38 weeks or during labour. It does not treat a kidney infection, so it is the wrong drug for fever, chills, vomiting or one-sided back pain. Report new numbness or tingling in the hands or feet, a persistent dry cough with breathlessness, or yellowing of the eyes, particularly on long-term use.

Storage

Store below 25 degrees Celsius in a dry place, protected from light and moisture, and out of reach of children. Keep the tablets in their blister or original container until each dose. Do not use after the expiry date on the pack. Return unused tablets to the pharmacy rather than keeping them, and do not start a leftover course at the first twinge without a urine sample, because not every burning sensation is an infection.
