Description

How to use

Reconstituted with water by the pharmacist or as the label directs. Shake before every dose and measure with the syringe or cup supplied. Cefixime is given once daily in most regimens, which makes adherence easy, and it can be given with or without food, though food reduces nausea. Give it at about the same time each day. Complete the full course, which for typhoid or a urinary infection is often longer than the few days people expect. Discard the bottle at the end of the in-use period.

Important warnings

Not for a child with a cephalosporin allergy or a severe penicillin allergy involving swelling or breathing difficulty. Tell the prescriber about kidney disease, which requires dose reduction, and about any history of antibiotic-associated colitis. Seek emergency care for facial or tongue swelling, wheeze, or a rash that blisters or peels. Report severe, watery or bloody diarrhoea during the course or in the weeks after. Third-generation cephalosporins are broad and valuable, and using them for viral illness or minor infections that a narrower drug would clear accelerates resistance, so this should be reserved for the indication it was prescribed for.

Storage

Store the sealed powder below 25 degrees Celsius in a dry place. After reconstitution, many cefixime suspensions are kept below 25 degrees rather than refrigerated, so follow the label exactly on this one. Do not freeze. Discard the remainder after the in-use period stated, typically fourteen days. Write the date on the bottle, shake before each dose, and keep it out of reach of children.
