Ampiclox 500mg capsules contain Ampicillin 250mg and Cloxacillin 250mg, two penicillin-type antibiotics that work together against susceptible bacterial infections.
It is used for bacterial infections such as those affecting the chest/lungs, ears, throat, skin and soft tissues, urinary tract and some post-surgical infections.
Take exactly as prescribed, preferably 30–60 minutes before meals; complete the full course and avoid use if you have a serious penicillin allergy.
One capsule four times a day, or exactly as prescribed. Take each dose on an empty stomach, one hour before food or two hours after, with a full glass of water, and avoid milk around the dose, because both ingredients are absorbed considerably less well with food. Six capsules is a small pack and will not cover a standard five-day course at four capsules a day, so check with the pharmacist how many packs your prescription requires before you leave. Complete the whole course.
Not for anyone with a penicillin or beta-lactam allergy. Tell your prescriber about liver disease, kidney disease and glandular fever, in which ampicillin causes a widespread rash in almost everyone who takes it. Seek emergency care for swelling of the face, lips or tongue, wheeze, breathing difficulty, or a rash that blisters or peels. Report severe or bloody diarrhoea during or in the weeks after the course, and any yellowing of the eyes or dark urine. Ampiclox is not a morning-after treatment, does not prevent or treat gonorrhoea or chlamydia, and does nothing for viral illness.
Store below 25 degrees Celsius in a dry place, away from steam, direct sunlight and heat, and out of reach of children. Keep the capsules in their blister or original container until each dose. Do not use after the expiry date on the pack. Return unused capsules to the pharmacy rather than keeping them in a bag or drawer, since small packs of ampiclox are among the most casually self-prescribed medicines in the country.
