Description

How to use

The pharmacist adds water to the powder to make the syrup, or you follow the label to make it up. Shake well before each dose and measure with the syringe or cup supplied rather than a household spoon. Cefadroxil is usually given twice daily, which is one of its advantages over antibiotics needing four doses, and it can be given with or without food, though food reduces stomach upset. Keep the twelve-hour gap. Give every dose in the course, including after the fever and sore throat have settled.

Important warnings

Do not give to a child with a known cephalosporin allergy, or one who has had a severe reaction to penicillin involving facial swelling, hives or breathing difficulty. Tell the prescriber about kidney problems, since the dose must be reduced, and about any previous antibiotic-associated diarrhoea or colitis. Seek emergency help for facial or tongue swelling, wheeze or a rash that blisters or peels. Report severe, watery or bloody diarrhoea during the course or in the weeks after it, and do not treat that with an anti-diarrhoeal at home. Cefadroxil can cause false positive results on some urine glucose tests and on the Coombs test.

Storage

Keep the unopened powder below 25 degrees Celsius in a dry place. Once reconstituted, store the syrup in a refrigerator between 2 and 8 degrees Celsius unless the label says otherwise, do not freeze, and discard any remaining suspension after the stated in-use period, typically fourteen days. Write the reconstitution date on the label. Shake before every dose and keep out of reach of children.
