Cefuroxime 125mg/5ml is an antibiotic oral suspension containing cefuroxime 125mg in every 5ml.
It is used to treat bacterial infections such as ear, throat, chest, skin and urinary tract infections.
Shake well before use and complete the prescribed course; it does not treat viral infections such as colds or flu.
The powder is reconstituted with water. Shake well before each dose and measure with the syringe or cup supplied. Cefuroxime axetil must be given with or immediately after food, because absorption roughly doubles with a meal and a dose given on an empty stomach may be too low to work. It is usually given twice daily, twelve hours apart. The taste is notoriously bitter, so give it with food that masks it and follow with a drink. Do not mix the whole dose into a large cup that the child may not finish. Complete the full course.
Do not give to a child with a known cephalosporin allergy or a severe penicillin allergy involving facial swelling, hives or breathing difficulty. Tell the prescriber about kidney disease, which requires dose adjustment, and about previous antibiotic-associated colitis. Get emergency help for facial or tongue swelling, wheeze, or a blistering or peeling rash. Report severe, watery or bloody diarrhoea during or after the course. Cefuroxime can cause false readings on some urine glucose tests and on the Coombs blood test, so mention it if blood tests are being done.
Store the dry powder below 25 degrees Celsius in a dry place. Once made up, refrigerate between 2 and 8 degrees Celsius, do not freeze, and discard the remainder after the in-use period on the label, commonly ten days. Write the reconstitution date on the bottle. Shake before every dose, keep the cap closed, and store out of reach of children.
