Flucloxacillin 500mg capsules contain flucloxacillin 500mg, a penicillin-type antibiotic mainly effective against certain bacteria that cause skin and soft-tissue infections.
It is commonly used for bacterial infections such as boils, abscesses, infected wounds, cellulitis, and some bone or joint infections.
Take exactly as prescribed, preferably on an empty stomach; complete the full course and avoid use if you have a serious penicillin allergy.
One capsule four times a day, giving five days from this pack of twenty, or exactly as prescribed. Flucloxacillin must be taken on an empty stomach: one hour before food or two hours after, with a full glass of water, and not with milk. Food cuts absorption substantially and is the commonest reason a course appears to fail. A workable schedule is on waking, mid-morning, late afternoon and at bedtime. Swallow the capsule whole and stay upright for a few minutes. Complete every capsule.
Do not take if you are allergic to penicillin or any beta-lactam antibiotic. Tell your prescriber about liver disease, if you are over 50, or if you have had jaundice on flucloxacillin before, because cholestatic liver injury is the reaction this penicillin is specifically known for and it is more common with age and with courses longer than two weeks. Seek emergency care for swelling of the face, lips or tongue, wheeze or a blistering rash. Report yellowing of the eyes or skin, dark urine, pale stools, itching without a rash, or an ache under the right ribs, at any point during the course or in the two months afterwards.
Store below 25 degrees Celsius in a dry place away from moisture, sunlight and heat, and out of reach of children. Keep capsules in their blister or original container until each dose. Do not use after the expiry date on the pack. Return unused capsules to the pharmacy rather than keeping them for the next boil, since recurrent boils need investigation rather than repeated self-treatment.
