Shalcip-TZ tablets contain Ciprofloxacin 500mg and Tinidazole 600mg, combining an antibiotic with an antimicrobial that targets certain parasites and bacteria.
They are mainly used for mixed intestinal infections causing diarrhoea or dysentery, including certain bacterial and parasitic infections.
Take exactly as prescribed and complete the course; avoid alcohol during treatment and separate it from antacids, iron or zinc supplements.
One tablet twice daily, twelve hours apart, after food with a full glass of water, or exactly as prescribed. Separate each dose by at least two hours from milk, yoghurt, antacids, iron, calcium, zinc and magnesium supplements and multivitamins, which bind the ciprofloxacin component. Keep fluid intake high and use oral rehydration solution while diarrhoea continues. Complete the prescribed number of days rather than stopping when stools firm up, and avoid strong sunlight while taking it.
No alcohol during the course or for at least three days after the last tablet, because tinidazole persists longer than metronidazole and the reaction causes flushing, vomiting, headache and palpitations. Stop and contact a doctor immediately for tendon pain or swelling, particularly the Achilles, for new numbness, tingling or burning in the hands or feet, or for confusion, hallucinations, severe anxiety, depression or suicidal thoughts. Avoid in epilepsy, myasthenia gravis, known long QT syndrome, pregnancy, breastfeeding and in children and adolescents. Report severe or bloody diarrhoea during or up to two months after the course, and never treat that with an anti-diarrhoeal.
Store below 30 degrees Celsius in a dry place, protected from light and moisture, and out of reach of children. Keep the tablets in their blister until each dose. Do not use after the expiry date on the pack. Return unused tablets to the pharmacy; a partial pack of a broad combination antibacterial kept at home is almost certain to be taken for the next unexplained stomach upset without any assessment.
