Description

How to use

One tablet twice daily with food for three days is the standard adult course, or exactly as prescribed. Taking it with food is important, not optional: nitazoxanide absorption roughly doubles when taken with a meal, so a dose swallowed on an empty stomach may be too low to work. Swallow whole with water. Complete the three days even if the diarrhoea has stopped after one. Maintain fluid intake, and use oral rehydration solution while stools remain loose.

Important warnings

Tell your prescriber about liver disease, kidney disease, diabetes, pregnancy or breastfeeding, since experience in these groups is more limited than with older antiparasitics. Expect your urine to turn a bright or greenish yellow, which is harmless and expected. Nitazoxanide is highly protein-bound and can compete with other highly bound drugs such as warfarin and phenytoin, so provide a full medicine list. Seek urgent care for a rash that blisters, facial swelling or breathing difficulty, or yellowing of the eyes. Persistent diarrhoea beyond fourteen days, or diarrhoea with high fever, severe abdominal pain or dehydration, needs medical assessment rather than a second course.

Storage

Store below 25 degrees Celsius in a dry place, protected from light and moisture, and out of reach of children. Keep the tablets in their blister until each dose. Do not use after the expiry date on the pack. Because this is a short three-day course, there should be little left over; return any remainder to the pharmacy rather than keeping an expensive antiparasitic for a future undiagnosed stomach upset.
