Description

Acinet is a high-ratio amoxicillin and clavulanic acid dry syrup, providing 400 mg of amoxicillin with 57 mg of clavulanate per 5 ml and reconstituting to a full 100 ml. The combination of high strength and large volume makes it the choice for an older child needing a proper course rather than a few days of treatment.

It is commonly used for bacterial infections of the ear, throat, sinuses, chest/lungs, skin, teeth and urinary tract, helping clear the infection and relieve related symptoms.

Shake well before every dose and use the measuring syringe/spoon provided; complete the full prescribed course, and do not use it for colds or flu because these are usually caused by viruses.

How to use

The powder is made up with water. Shake hard before every dose, since amoxiclav settles rapidly, and measure only with the syringe or cup supplied. Give each dose at the start of a meal or feed, which substantially reduces the diarrhoea this combination is known for. The 457 formulation is given twice daily, twelve hours apart. Ask the pharmacist to confirm the bottle covers the full number of days prescribed at your child's dose. Discard whatever is left at the end of the in-use period rather than keeping it.

Important warnings

Not for a child with a penicillin or beta-lactam allergy, or one who has had jaundice or a liver reaction with amoxiclav. Tell the prescriber about liver or kidney disease and glandular fever. Emergency care is needed for facial, lip or tongue swelling, wheeze, breathing difficulty or a rash that blisters or peels. Report severe, watery or bloody diarrhoea during or up to two months after the course, and any yellowing of the eyes, dark urine or pale stools. Do not interchange amoxiclav strengths by volume, as the amoxicillin to clavulanate ratio differs between the 228, 312 and 457 preparations.

Storage

Store the sealed powder below 25 degrees Celsius in a dry place. Once reconstituted, keep refrigerated between 2 and 8 degrees Celsius, never frozen, and discard after seven days or the period the label states. Clavulanic acid breaks down steadily in solution, so an old bottle is unreliable rather than merely weaker. Write the reconstitution date on the label, keep it on a fridge shelf rather than in the door, and store out of reach of children.
