Azithromycin 500mg tablets contain azithromycin 500mg, a macrolide antibiotic used to fight certain bacterial infections.
It is commonly used for bacterial infections of the throat, ears, sinuses, chest/lungs and skin, and some sexually transmitted infections.
Take exactly as prescribed and complete the full course; it can be taken with or without food, but do not use it for colds or flu.
One 500 mg tablet once daily for three days, or exactly as prescribed. Take it at the same time each day with a full glass of water. It may be taken with or without food, though food reduces nausea. Keep at least two hours between the tablet and any antacid containing aluminium or magnesium, which reduces absorption. Do not be alarmed that the course is only three tablets: azithromycin remains active in your tissues for days afterwards, so improvement continues well after the last dose.
Not for anyone allergic to azithromycin, erythromycin or clarithromycin. Tell your prescriber about liver disease, kidney disease, myasthenia gravis, a known long QT interval or heart rhythm problem, and low potassium or magnesium, since azithromycin can prolong the QT interval. Report palpitations or fainting. Seek care for a rash that blisters or peels, facial swelling, breathing difficulty, or yellowing of the eyes with dark urine. Severe or bloody diarrhoea during or up to two months after the course needs assessment. Tell your prescriber if you take warfarin, digoxin, ciclosporin or any other QT-prolonging medicine.
Store below 25 degrees Celsius in a dry place away from moisture, sunlight and heat, and out of reach of children. Keep the tablets in the blister until each dose. Do not use after the expiry date on the pack. Because the pack is small and the course short, there should be nothing left over; if there is, it means a dose was missed, and the pharmacist should be told rather than the tablet kept.
