Description

Amoxicillin 500mg capsules contain amoxicillin 500mg, a penicillin-type antibiotic that kills susceptible bacteria causing infections.

They are commonly used for bacterial infections of the throat, ears, sinuses, chest/lungs, teeth, skin and urinary tract, and may be combined with other medicines to treat H. pylori stomach infection.

Take exactly as prescribed and complete the full course; it may be taken with or without food, and should not be used for viral infections such as colds or flu or by people with a serious penicillin allergy.

How to use

One capsule three times a day, roughly eight hours apart, giving five days from this pack of fifteen, or exactly as prescribed. Amoxicillin can be taken with or without food, which makes it one of the easiest antibiotics to fit around a working day. Swallow whole with water. Space the doses evenly rather than clustering them, and complete the whole course even after the fever and pain have settled. If a dose is missed, take it as soon as you remember unless the next is nearly due.

Important warnings

Do not take if you are allergic to penicillin or any beta-lactam antibiotic. Tell your prescriber about kidney disease, and about glandular fever, in which amoxicillin produces a widespread rash in the great majority of patients. Seek emergency care for hives, swelling of the face, lips or tongue, wheeze or breathing difficulty. Report severe, watery or bloody diarrhoea during or in the weeks after the course. Amoxicillin does nothing for colds, influenza, most sore throats or viral coughs, and taking it for those provides only side effects and resistance.

Storage

Store below 25 degrees Celsius in a dry place, away from moisture, sunlight and heat, and out of reach of children. Keep the capsules in their blister or original container until each dose, and avoid the bathroom cabinet. Do not use after the expiry date on the pack. Return unused capsules to the pharmacy rather than keeping a partial course in a drawer, where it will eventually be taken for the wrong illness.
